Abuja, FCT
Abuja is unarguably the most beautiful city
in the country. The beauty of the city lies in
its excellent infrastructure.
The city is a planned city and was built
mainly in the 1980s with the objective of
replacing the country’s most populous city
of Lagos as the capital on 12 December
1991.
The parks in Abuja also make the city quite

Obateru is the founder of Obat Oil, one of
Nigeria’s leading privately held oil
companies. Obat Oil was established by
Obateru in 1981 and the company currently
has more than 50 gas stations across the six

one of the largest tank farms in Africa
which has the capacity to store 65 million
liters of petroleum products.
In 2014, Forbes revealed that he was worth
an estimated US$300 million. He is also
ranked by Forbes magazine as the second

Ooni of Ife, with $225 million and the

2015 as the fifth GIFA Laureate, following
Tun Abdullah Badawi (2011), HRH Sultan
Nazrin Shah (2012), Shaukat Aziz (2013)
and Nurrsultan Nazarbayev (2014).
The Emir once revealed that he earns over
N14 million per annum as salary from the
Federal Government.
Currently, his net worth is unknown but he is
said to be worth several millions of dollars
based on his numerous assets.
5. Alaafin Of Oyo
Lamidi Olayiwole III is the Alaafin of Oyo.
He was crowned in 1970 after Alaafin
Gbadegeshin Ladigbolu II left the throne. He
is also one of the richest kings in the
country.
Prior to becoming the Alaafin, he was an
insurance clerk and a boxer. Lamidi was a
one-time Chancellor of the University of
Sokoto, a position which he held for 12
years. During his time as chancellor, 
he
issued memorandums concerning university
education and dealt with significant
problems of that time.
In 1990, he was appointed by the Federal
government to lead the Muslims spread
across the 21 states of the country.
6. Ooni of Ile-ife
Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Eniitan is the
current Ooni of Ife. He was born 1974 and
became the Ooni of Ife following the death
of the previous Ooni in 2015. His
predecessor was ranked the second richest
Nigerian king in this list.
Oba Adeyeye graduated as an accountant
from The Polytechnic, Ibadan and he is
currently a member of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an
Associate Accounting Technician.
He holds a number of honorary doctorate
degrees: one in Public Administration from
the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and
another in Law from Igbinedion University.
He is also the Chancellor at the University
of Nigeria, Nsukka.
7. Olu of Warri
Godfrey Emiko is current Olu of Warri and
makes our list as one of the richest kings in
Nigeria. He was named as the successor to
the throne by the Itsekiri traditional council
following the death of Ogiame Atuwatse II in
2015. He is the younger brother of Ogiame
Atuwatse 
The Olu of Warri is the traditional ruler of
the Kingdom of Warri. Warri is the oil hub of
the South-South and it is home to several
oil and gas companies.
8. Oba of Benin
The Oba of Benin is the traditional ruler of
the Edo people. Historically, the Oba of
Benin was the Head of State of the Benin
Empire until the annexation of the Empire
by the Briitish in 1897.
The current Oba is Ewuare II. He was born
Eheneden Erediauwa on the 20th of October,
1953 and was crowned the Oba of Benin on
20 October 2016. He is the 40th Oba of
Benin.
Prior to his coronation, Ewuare schooled in
the United Kingdom where he bagged a
degree in Economics from the University of
Wales, UK. He also holds a Master of Public
Administration degree from Rutgers
University Graduate School, New Jersey,
USA.
After his education, Ewuare worked at the
United Nations between 1981 and 1982. He
also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to
Angola and Sweden, with accreditation to
Norway, Denmark and the Republic of
Finland. He was also Nigeria’s Ambassador
to Italy.
9. Oba of Lagos
The Oba of Lagos is Rilwan Babatunde
Osuolale Aremu Akiolu and he is one of the
richest kings in Nigeria. He was born on the
29 th of October 1943 and he attended the
University of Lagos where he bagged a
Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B).
After his secondary education, he served for
32 years in the Nigeria Police Force,
entering the force in 1970. He served in
various capacities, was promoted to
assistant inspector-general of Police in
1999, and was active until his retirement in
2002.
A year later, he was crowned the 21st Oba
of Lagos. After his coronation, he built a
palace which was said to worth an
estimated N2 billion. It is said that the Oba
of Lagos is one of the most powerful kings
in Africa as he is the traditional ruler of the
largest city in the country.

He was promoted to the rank
of Professor of Quantity Surveying in 2015
at the age of 37 making him the youngest
professor at the Ahmadu Bello University
Zaria.
Prof. Ahmad Ibrahim Doko
Professor Doko was born in Niger State in
1978 at Doko town, where he attended
North Primary School, Doko between 1979
and 1985, and from where he proceeded to
Government Secondary School, Doko and
Ahmadu Bello University Demonstration
Secondary School between 1985 and 1991.
He proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria in 1991, where he obtained his B.Sc
degree in Quantity Surveying in 1998, after
which he joined the quantity surveying
department of the university as assistant
lecturer in 2000.
Doko proceeded to King Fahd University of
Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia, in
2001, where he obtained his M.Sc degree in
construction engineering and management in
2003, from where he proceeded to
Loughborough University, United Kingdom in
2004, where he obtained his Ph.D degree in
2007.

Professor Doko served as head of quantity
surveying department of the university
between 2008 and 2012. 
During this period,
he was appointed as the managing director
of the main consultancy firm of the
university (ABUCONS) in 2010.
Being a Professor in Nigeria: What Does It
Entail?
When it comes to achieving the highest
academic rank in the university which is the
professorship, the journey can be likened to
that of the proverbial thousand miles.
However, it seems some academics have
found a way to hack the system by taking
quicker steps hence leading to them
reaching their destination faster.
In this post, we have decided to take a look
at a couple of individuals that have attained
the position of professor in the Nupeland at a
relatively young age.
But first, let’s take a look at what it entails
to become a University Professor.
Basically, the rank of a professor is a
University based appointment but prior to
achieving this rank, there are other ranks to
attain.
On the path to becoming a professor, one of
the first ranks you will attain is the
instructor position. 
Typically, instructors hold
a minimum of a Master’s degree or
equivalent and they must have completed
most or all of the requirements for the
doctorate or its equivalent.
After the instructor rank, the next position is
the Assistant Professor. Generally, an
assistant professor is expected to have
earned a doctoral or professional degree
(such as a law degree) or equivalent and
they must have demonstrated a
commitment to teaching and scholarly or
professional work of high caliber.
The next is the Associate Professor which
is a position that meets the requirements for
appointment as an assistant professor but it
differs in that the individual must also have
a national reputation as a scholar or
professional.
After reaching these prior positions, your
final step is the appointment as a Professor.
For this position, you are expected to meet
the requirements for appointment as an
associate professor. Also, you must have a
distinguished record of accomplishment that
leads to an international or, as appropriate,
national reputation in their field of expertise.

March, 1989 in Bariga, Lagos State Nigeria.
He attended both primary and high schools
in Lagos but for his tertiary education,

Professional music for the talented Yoruba
singer began in 2010 with the release of his
first single; ‘Eni Duro’ Eni Duro was released
under the Coded Tunes record label which
Olamide was signed unto at the time. The song received wide critical acclaim and
instantly shot Olamide to limelight.
In 2011, he released his first album titled
‘Rapsodi’ in which he featured several top
Nigerian artistses like ID Cabasa, Wizkid,
Dbanj, Reminisce and 9ice. It’s needless to
say that the album was a huge success.
Olamide didn’t rest on his oars after the
success of his first album, in 2012; he went
on to release another album titled YBNL.
The album had several hit singles like ‘First
of All’, ‘Voice of the street’, ‘Ilefo Iluminati’
‘Stupid love’ ‘Durosoke’ and ‘Owotabua’.
Once again, the album which featured
several major Nigerian artistes like Tiwa
Savage, Dammy Krane, Kayswitch, Samklef,
Davido and a couple of up and coming
artistes, was well received.
Another album titled “Baddest Guy Ever
Liveth’ was released in 2013 which featured
hit singles like ‘Anifowose’ ‘Story for the
Gods’ and ‘Yemi my Lover’ and in 2014, he
released his latest album, Street OT, in
which he featured Don Jazzy for ‘Skelemba’
and Viktoh for ‘Up in the Club.

One attribute that has helped Olamide stay
afloat in his musical career is his ability to
stay away from scandals and his strong
work ethic. This is evident in the number of
albums he has been able to release within a
short time of launching his musical career.

 A line in the Nigerian national anthem says “the
labour of our heroes past shall never be in
vain.” This can only be achieved if these
Nigerian heroes do not go into extinction in the
hearts of Nigerians who sing/sang the anthem
every morning at the assembly ground,
government functions or similar occasions of
national importance.
Nigeria has had a couple of patriotic citizens
who made significant impacts in the
development of the country, and it will only be
fair if they are honored even in their absence.
Below is a list of ten Nigerians whose name
cannot be erased from the sand of
Nigerian history.
<h1> Nigerian Heroes You
Shouldn’t Forget</h1>
1. Sir Ahmadu Bello June 1910 – January 1966
 Sir Ahmadu Bello, KBE was born in Rabbah
Sokoto and is one of the most prominent early
leaders in Nigeria. He was the Sardauna of
Sokoto and a leader of the Northern People’s
Congress where he dominated Nigerian politics
throughout the First Nigerian Republic. Sir
Ahmadu Bello fought actively in the independent
struggle of Nigeria, and on his return from a trip
to Britain, he was nominated to represent the
province of Sokoto in the regional House of
Assembly.
 He made sure his voice was well heard in the
assembly and also consulted
other representatives of the northern emirates
to arrive at an agreed conclusion. KBE was
assassinated on 15 January 1966 in a coup
which toppled Nigeria’s post-independence
government. Although he is no more alive, his
legacy lives on. His face graces the ₦200 note,
and The Ahmadu Bello University of Zaria was
named after him. Aside from that, Bello’s
greatest legacy was the modernization and
unification of the diverse people of Northern
Nigeria.
2. Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe November 1904 – May 1996
 Chief Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe was one of the
leading figures of modern Nigerian nationalism.
He was the first president of Nigeria, from 1
October 1963 to 16 January 1966. He also
served as the second and last Governor-General
from 1960 to 1963. He attended Hope Waddell
Training Institute, Calabar, and Methodist Boys
High School Lagos before attending Howard
University, Washington DC and Lincoln
University, Pennsylvania.
Fondly referred to as Zik, Nnamdi promoted pro-
African nationalist agenda while he worked as
an editor for African Morning Post. He
became the first Nigerian to be named to the
privy council of the United stated.
 Following the declaration of Nigeria as a
republic, Dr Nnamdi fought relentlessly for an
independent Nigeria. His unforgettable hard
work has led to several places being named
after him.
They include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International
Airport Abuja, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in
Enugu, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka,
Anambra State, Nnamdi Azikiwe Press Centre,
Dodan Barracks, Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos and
Azikiwe Avenue in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His
legacy also lives on as long as Nigeria’s ₦500
note exists – his portrait is on it.
3. Funmilayo Ransome Kuti
October 1900 – April 1978
 Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a teacher,
political campaigner, women’s rights activist
and traditional aristocrat. She was the mother
of famous afro-beat artist, Femi Kuti and also
the first woman in Nigeria to drive a car. Due to
Ransome’s political activism, she was described
as the doyen of female rights in Nigeria, as well
as “The Mother of Africa.”
She was elected to the native house of Chiefs
and served as an Oloye of the Yoruba people.
Her activism rubbed off on her three sons and
even in her old age, they had faced several
oppositions from the Nigerian military juntas.
 Fumilayo died from injuries sustained after she
was thrown down from the third-floor window in
the Kalakuta Republic. Her legacy is seen in her
children and grandchildren as they still preach
the word through their music. In 2012, there
was a debate between the federal government
and the Kuti family, as the family insisted that
the federal government should apologize for the
death of their mother before they think
of immortalizing her on the proposed ₦5,000
note..
4. Chief Anthony Enahoro
July 1923 – December 2010
 Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro was Nigeria’s
foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy
activists. At 21, he became the editor of
Nnamdi Azikiwe’s newspaper, Southern Nigerian
Defender , making him the youngest editor
in Nigeria. Enahoro was the first to move the
motion for Nigeria’s independence and was
usually referred to as the “Father of the
Nigerian State”. He was an academician and
fought for the good cause of the nation until his
death in late 2010.
5. Kudirat Abiola
1951 – June 1996

Kudirat was the wife of MKO Abiola and a first
lady in the making who was ripped off before
her time. At 21, she married Chief Moshood
Abiola and they had seven children together.
Kudirat adopted many social causes and was to
become a prime supporter of the educational
programs of the Ansar-Ur-Deen movement in
Nigeria.
She was also a successful businesswoman who
built a pharmaceutical company. She was an
activist and was very much involved in the oil
workers 12-week strike against the military.
 The strike was the longest recorded in African
history of oil workers and it really got to the
government. She was also part of the march for
freedom that took place in 1995 and she won
the woman of the year award in the same year
and the previous one.
Unfortunately, Kudirat was assassinated with a
P 90 rifle by unknown men on Lagos-Ibadan
Expressway. That event brought an end to her
brilliant and bold life but she is still remembered
often, especially whenever the Kudirat Abiola
Way at Ojota/Oregun is mentioned or
passed through.
 6. Margaret Ekpo
1914 – 2006
 Margaret Ekpo was a Nigerian women’s rights
activist and social mobilizer who was a
pioneering female politician in the country’s
First Republic. She was born in Creek Town,
Cross River State. She was married to a doctor,
John Udo Ekpo, and they later moved to Aba
where she played major roles as a grassroots
and nationalist politician.
She earned a diploma in domestic science at
the new Dublin Institute of Technology, Dublin
Ireland. On her return to Nigeria, she established
a Domestic Science and Sewing Institute in Aba.
In 1954, she established the Aba Township
Women Association and that led to an
outnumbering of men voters by women voters in
the city election that held the next year. The
Calabar International Airport was named after
Margaret Ekpo in 2001, sadly she died five years
later.
7. Chief Obafemi Awolowo
March 1909 – May 1987
 Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo was a
nationalist and a statesman who played a key
role in Nigeria’s independence movement. He is
most notable as the outstanding first premier of
the Western Region but was also a successful
federal commissioner for finance and vice
president of the Federal Executive Council in
the Civil War.
Awolowo was the first Leader of Government
Business and Minister of Local Government and
Finance, and first Premier of the Western
Region under Nigeria’s parliamentary system,
from 1952 to 1959.
Beginning from the eve of independence,
Awolowo led the Action Group as the Leader of
the Opposition in the federal parliament and
although he didn’t win the 1979 and 1983
presidential elections, he had the second-
highest number of votes. He introduced free
primary education and free health care in
Nigeria and also built the Liberty Stadium in
Ibadan.
 Unlike most of his contemporaries that were
assassinated, Awolowo died a noble death at his
Ikenne home on 9 May 1987, at the age of 78.
He is the man on round glasses that is seen on
the ₦100 naira note.
 8. Herbert Macaulay
November 1864 – May 1946
 Olayinka Herbert Samuel Heelas Badmus is the
grandson of Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first
African bishop of the Niger Territory who
returned to Nigeria after being sold to
slave merchants. Herbert was a nationalist,
politician, engineer, architect, journalist, and
musician and is considered by many Nigerians
as the founder of Nigerian nationalism.
Macaulay was a strong opponent of British rule
in Nigeria. In 1919, he argued successfully for
the chiefs whose land had been taken by the
British in front of the Privy Council in London
and as a result, the colonial government was
forced to pay compensation to the chiefs.
This made the British Council mad at Macaulay
and jailed him twice. Macaulay became very
popular and on 24 June 1923, when he founded
the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP),
the first Nigerian political party. He later died in
1946 and was the face of the defunct ₦1 note.
 9. Hajiya Gambo Sawaba
1933 – 2001
 Hajiya Gambo Sawaba was a supporter of the
Northern Elements Progressive Union during the
First Republic. She was one of the early
members of NEPU in Zaria, whose aim was
to identify with the working class and poor and
to support them.
Although Gambo had a hard time moving from
one husband to the other she still tried to make
a mark in her generation irrespective of being
married four times to four different men. There
had been incidences of domestic abuse in one
of her marriages and that led her to start
up a charitable organization that focused on
women liberation.
 10. Murtala Mohammed
November 1938 – February
1976
 General Murtala Ramat Muhammed is one of
the well known faces of Nigerian heroes. He
was the Federal Military Head Of State
in Nigeria for a year. He resumed office in 1975
and was assassinated the next year at the age
of 37 in a coup led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka.
Today, his portrait adorns the front of ₦20 note
and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in
Lagos was named in his honour.

The Nigerian Civil War, popularly known as the
Nigeria-Biafra War which lasted from
6th July 1967 – 15th January 1970 almost
destroyed the unity of Nigeria.
The Civil War was fought to reintegrate and
reunify the country. It was a result of the
Nigerian government’s efforts to counter the
struggle by Igbo people of the Eastern Region
to break away from Nigeria under the new name
– The Republic of Biafra led by a military officer
and politician, late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu
Ojukwu.
 It is believed that the war became inevitable
because the Igbo people felt they could no
longer co-exist with the Northern-dominated
Federal Government of Nigeria.
 The Nigerian Civil War which broke out on 6
July 1967 and lasted until January 15, 1970,
was the culmination of an uneasy peace and
instability that had plagued the Nation from
independence in 1960.
 It was a result of a long period of alleged
political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious
deprivations, which had its genesis in the
geography, history, culture and demography of
Nigeria.
<h1> Biafran States</h1>
 The Republic of Biafra was mainly made up of
the former Eastern region of Nigeria and was
inhabited principally by the Igbo ethnic group.
Biafra has been commonly divided into four
main “tribes” which include: the Igbos, the
Ibibio-Efiks, the Ijaws and the Ogojas.

 The modern-day states that make up Biafra
from the eastern region and Midwest are Abia,
Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi,
Imo, Delta, Rivers and Cross River, Igbanke in
Edo state and southern part of Benue state.

<h2> Biafran Flag</h2>
 The flag of the Republic of Biafra was created
by the Biafran Government and raised on May
30, 1967. It consists of red, black, and green
horizontal colours. At the middle of it, a golden
sun rises over a golden bar; the sun has eleven
rays, representing the eleven provinces of
Biafra.

represents the blood that unites all people of
Black African ancestry and shed for liberation.
 The Black colour represents the black people
whose existence as a nation, though not a
nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the

wealth of the region.
<h3> Biafran Currency</h3>
 The Republic of Biafra had a different currency
from that of Nigeria – the Biafran pound
which went public on 28 January 1968.

 The Biafran government created the Bank of
Biafra, accomplished under “Decree No. 3 of
1967”. The bank was administered by a
governor and four directors; the first governor,
who signed on bank notes, was Sylvester Ugoh.
 The currency of Biafra had been the Nigerian
pound until the Bank of Biafra started printing
out its own notes, the Biafran pound. It is
estimated that a total of £115–140 million
Biafran pounds were in circulation by the end of
the war.
<h4> The Genesis</h4>
 The immediate cause of the civil war may be
identified as the coup and the counter coup of
1966 which altered the political equation and
destroyed the fragile trust existing among the
major ethnic groups.

 Before the full-blown war, there was a military
coup in 1966 (carried out by Maj. Nzeogwu
which led to the death of Tafawa Belewa,
among others), a counter-coup (led by Gowon,
which led to the brutal murder of Aguiyi Ironsi,
Fajuyi, among others) and a persecution of the
Igbo people living in Northern Nigeria, forcing
them to return home. Even on their way home,
many of them were killed in disturbing
circumstances.
 There have been divided opinions on the 1966
coup as some argue that corruption among the
civilian ruling class pushed the military to
organize the coup, while others opine that the
control of oil production in the Niger Delta was
also a major factor.

 In May 1967, the Federal Military Government
divided the country into twelve states from the
original four regions, but the former Eastern
Region under Lt. Col. Ojukwu saw the act of the
creation of states by decree “without
consultation” as the last straw, and declared
the Region an independent state of “Biafra”.
 Consequently, the Federal Military Government
saw this act of secession as illegal. Several
meetings were held to resolve the issue
peacefully without success. To avoid
disintegration of the country, the central
government was left with no choice but to
forcefully bring back the region to the main
fold.
 As soon as the war began, the Federal Military
Government of Nigeria led by General Yakubu
Gowon surrounded the Biafra territory and
captured the oil –rich coastal areas.
 The blockade imposed during the war led to
severe famine such that within the two and half
years (30 months) the war lasted, there were
over 100,000 overall military casualties, while
nearly two million civilians died from starvation,
which was a deliberate policy adopted by
Nigeria to bring the people on the Biafra side to
their knees.

 Western powers were also involved in the war,
with Britain and the then Soviet Union backing
Nigeria, while France and a few other countries
supported Biafra.
<h5> The Biafra Civil War And Its
End</h5>
 At the orders of the Federal Military
Government, the Nigerian federal troops
marched in two divisions into Biafra on the 6th
of July, 1976. Division 1, led by Col. Shuwa
operated through the north of Biafra, while the
second Division advanced on Nsukka which later
fell on July 14.
 On the 9th of July, the Biafrans led by Lt. Col.
Banjo retaliated by marching into the mid-
western region of Nigeria across the Niger River,
passing through Benin City and later stopped at
Ore on August 21.

 The Biafran troops captured the mid-west easily
because there was little repulsion from soldiers
guarding the region. This infuriated Gowon and
he asked Col. Muhammad Murtala to form
another division (Division 2) to drive the
Biafrans out of mid-west and attack Biafra as
well.
 The mid-west region was recaptured by the
Nigerian army on the 20th of September.
 Enugu was made the capital of Biafra, and later
when Enugu was captured in October 1967, Aba,
Umuahia and Owerri served successively as the
provisional capitals.
Within a year, the Federal Military Government
captured the city of Port Harcourt and many
other coastal oil facilities. The Federal Miltary
Government blocked all the routes for
transporting food into the Republic of Biafra
which led to severe starvation.
The FMG saw this as a war strategy and a way
to keep Nigeria united, while many people
around the world saw this as nothing but a
genocide. The food flown in by foreign
mercenary pilots was very little and couldn’t
solve the starvation Biafra was facing. Over 2
million Biafrans died of starvation.

 By the end of the year 1969, it was obvious that
the war will soon come to an end. The FMG
launched its final operation known as “Operation
Tail-Wind” on January 7, 1970.
 The operation was carried out by the 3rd
Marine Commando Division and supported by
the 1st and 2nd Infantry Division. Owerri was
captured on the 9th of January, while Uli fell on
the 11th of that same January.
Aware of the hopelessness of the situation, the
self- acclaimed Biafra head of state, Lt. Col.
Ojukwu fled the Republic immediately with his
family on the 10 of January 1970.
The commander of the Biafran army, who was
left with the administration of the Republic later
surrendered to the Federal Government on the
14 of January, 1970, thus bringing the civil
war and bloodshed to an end. The war officially
ended on the 15 of January, 1970.
 The sudden end of the war in 1970 was a big
relief to both sides and the entire world was
elated when General Yakubu Gowon said there
was no victor, no vanquished. His government
also introduced the popular three ‘Rs’, which
stood for Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and
Reconstruction.
At the end of the civil war, the Federal Military
Government ordered that all Biafran currencies
must be deposited into a bank account
immediately or they would become worthless.
After everyone complied with the directive, they
again ordered that every former Biafran account
holder will receive only the sum of 20 pounds
regardless of how much they had in their
account.
This most Biafrans believed was an unjustified
act of the civil war as heads of households
were forced to rebuild their financial holdings as
well as support a typically large African family
with only 20 pounds.
